Born in the Italian courts of the 15th century, ballet has become a beloved global art form, with Sweden home to one of its oldest companies, the Royal Swedish Ballet. Today, this graceful, story-driven dance is reimagined at Ballet of Lights at Musikaliska Kvarteret, where classical ballet meets modern technology in a luminous show inspired by The Sleeping Beauty. In this stunning live music venue, talented dancers, fibre optic lights, and Tchaikovsky’s iconic music come together for a fresh, magical performance.
What is “Ballet of Lights”?
It is an abridged version of Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty that offers an unconventional ballet experience. You can expect to see classical ballet, to hear Tchaikovsky’s music, and to be told Princess Aurora’s story however this all comes with an enthralling twist. Ballet of Lights begins with a fascinating introduction covering the history of ballet and leads into a show featuring costumes fitted with fibre optic lights. This winning formula celebrates the performance dance whilst providing an informative and more accessible production for audiences.
Ballet, its storytelling and the show
Although not every ballet aims to tell a story, The Sleeping Beauty is a classic example of a narrative ballet. Traditionally, story ballets rely on elaborate scenery, costumes, music, and choreography for storytelling. This phenomenal dance and light show has certainly taken notes from tradition but it also embraces modernity.
It may come as a surprise to some but by not knowing the plot beforehand, to follow a story ballet is no easy feat. The flowing movements of the ballerinas are illuminated by fibre optic lights which adapt to mood changes throughout the story using different colours.
